22 May Training programmer on “protecting needs of women and girls during emergency situations
A two day training programme on “protecting needs of women and girls during emergency situations” was held in the Women Development Center, Kandy. On the 13th and 14th of December 2012. Community volunteers and staff members of the Woman Development Center (Kandy) actively took part in the workshop and learning activities that intended to share the experiences of working in the fields and discuss about the special needs of women and how those needs should be addressed during a time of calamity.
The participants were provided with several introductory sessions of identifying a disaster, detecting the changes in environment and the type of evacuation steps to be taken, including the basics of gender dynamics and how would they operate in a time of a disaster. Participants represented several districts of the country where they recorded they have come across a range of natural disaster situation, for including floods, droughts, landslides, and minor earth quakes.
