In South Asia, communities are on the frontlines of disasters, yet their knowledge and leadership are often overlooked. This theme emphasizes the importance of recognizing communities as agents of change rather than mere beneficiaries of disaster risk reduction (DRR) initiatives. Duryog Nivaran (DN) serves as a vital connector, linking grassroots practices with regional policymaking to ensure that local realities inform resilience strategies at national and global levels.
At the core of DN’s mission is the belief that true resilience starts with communities. Through various initiatives, DN has worked to amplify community voices and foster platforms for grassroots learning and advocacy. For instance, under the SIDRRA program, DN conducted a Scoping Study on the Role of Networks in Amplifying Community Voice, which shaped its advocacy efforts. Collaborating with IWMI during World Water Week, DN promoted the need for inclusive early warning systems that leverage local knowledge.
DN representatives actively participate in regional and global policy discussions, advocating for participatory governance in DRR while facilitating dialogues in Bangladesh and Nepal to enhance collaboration among local NGOs, civil society organizations, and research entities.
Local initiatives led by DN members were:
Strengthening a Local Emergency Operation Centre in Nepal under the DRRM Act 2017.
Implementing a Disability-Inclusive DRR program in Sri Lanka to empower marginalized groups
Promoting climate-resilient agricultural practices among women and smallholder farmers in India.
Launching a sub-grant on “Advancing Community-Centered Inclusive Disaster Risk Governance” to pilot inclusive governance practices across the region.
