02 Nov Duryog Nivaran Co-Convenes the First Global Feminist Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction: Reimagining Resilience 2026
Duryog Nivaran is proud to be a co-convener of the inaugural Global Feminist Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), “Reimagining Resilience: Collective Futures for Disaster Risk Reduction,” taking place from 5–7 November 2026 in Istanbul, Türkiye.
As a member of the Women and Gender Stakeholder Group (WGSG) of the UNDRR, Duryog Nivaran joins WEDO, ActionAid International, UNDRR, UN Women, Oxfam KEDV, AWID, HUDOTO Law Nature and Society Foundation, Shifting the Power Coalition, and the Huairou Commission to bring this critical event to life.
This landmark gathering will unite feminist movements, DRR practitioners, humanitarian actors, climate justice advocates, researchers, and community leaders to advance a shared vision for disaster risk reduction rooted in justice, prevention, care, accountability, and collective resilience.
Why This Conference Matters
The conference is built on the understanding that disasters are not simply “natural.” While hazards may be natural, disasters are shaped by structural vulnerabilities, inequality, and systems that determine who is exposed to risk and whose voices are heard. Women, girls, and marginalized communities bear disproportionate impacts, yet feminist leadership remains underrepresented in DRR decision-making.
Taking place between CBD COP17 and UNFCCC COP31, this event recognizes that the climate crisis and disaster crisis are inseparable. It aims to bridge the gaps between DRR, climate justice, humanitarian action, and feminist movements.
Program Highlights
The three-day agenda is designed to move from shared understanding to collective action:
Day 1 (5 Nov) – Understanding the Landscape: Plenaries on the political economy of vulnerability, frontline feminisms, and transformative prevention.
Day 2 (6 Nov) – Learning and Strategy Building: Interactive “Learning Labs” on topics like the Sendai Framework, Early Warning Systems, and grassroots women’s organizing, followed by Strategy Sessions on resource mobilization and national DRR governance.
Day 3 (7 Nov) – Collective Commitments: Consolidating priorities, sharing strategy proposals, and establishing shared accountability for the road ahead.
The event will also feature a “Feminist Open Mike Night” to nurture trust and collective power, and will conclude with a closing ritual and farewell lunch.
Duryog Nivaran’s Contribution
As a co-convener, Duryog Nivaran brings its longstanding expertise in regional disaster risk reduction and its commitment to gender justice to the organizing table. Our participation underscores our dedication to ensuring that the voices of South Asian communities and grassroots women are central to the global DRR agenda.
