A Grand Start to the APMCDRR in Manila: Calls for Innovation, Inclusion, and Collaboration

The opening ceremony of the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR) kicked off with great energy today in Manila, Philippines. Hosted by the Government of the Philippines, the event was inaugurated by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who set a strong tone for the conference with a call to action on climate change and disaster risk management.

In his keynote address, President Marcos emphasised the urgent need for countries to invest more in addressing the growing challenges of climate change and disaster risks. He underscored the importance of prioritising marginalised communities, who often bear the brunt of these crises. The President highlighted the significance of innovative solutions to tackle the formidable challenges ahead, stressing the need for increased collaboration among countries in the region to create more resilient societies. He reaffirmed the Philippines’ commitment to building a more inclusive and sustainable future for all.

Adding to this, Mr. Kamal Kishore, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), echoed similar sentiments. He called for greater cooperation and solidarity among nations to address the global impacts of climate change and disaster risks. His message emphasised that the world needs collective action now more than ever to mitigate these urgent threats.

The conference has also seen the active participation of members from Duryog Nivaran’s Steering Committee and staff from Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. They have contributed to various sessions, engaging with individuals and organisations from across the region. The team has also been busy networking, laying the groundwork for future collaborations. An important focus for them during the conference is discussing the progress of the Strengthening Inclusive Disaster Risk Governance for Climate Resilience in Asia (SIDRRA) project with partner representatives from the International Rescue Commitee (IRC) and the Asian Disaster Reduction and Response Network (ADDRN).

As the APMCDRR unfolds, the conversations, ideas, and partnerships forged here will play a crucial role in shaping the region’s disaster risk reduction strategies in the years to come. Stay tuned for more updates on this pivotal event!
