30 Sep Final Report from Dalit Women’s Right Forum (DWRF) and DanChurchAid (DCA)
Strengthening the Capacity of Women in Community Forest User Groups (CFUG) on Fire Hazard Management
This project in Kailali District, Nepal, aimed to empower marginalized Indigenous Tharu and Dalit women, who are disproportionately affected by increasing forest fires yet excluded from decision-making. Focusing on 25 Community Forest User Groups (CFUGs), the initiative strengthened community technical capacity in fire prevention and control.
Key activities included training 80% female CFUG officials, developing a forest fire resource manual, and constructing fire belts and recharge ponds. The project also conducted multi-hazard risk assessments and advocated for budget allocation to local governments. By utilizing traditional leadership structures and engaging local environmental journalists, the project ensured community ownership. These efforts successfully reduced fire risks, as demonstrated by the effective containment of a forest fire in Ratna Community Forest. Ultimately, the project reached 225 participants, including CFUG leaders, local representatives, and community members.
