Duryog Nivaran’s Involvement at APMCDRR 2024: Championing Gender and Social Inclusion

Duryog Nivaran (DN) will be spearheading two significant initiatives: the Gender Observatory and a Help Desk on Gender & Social Inclusion at the upcoming Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR).

The Gender Observatory

The Gender Observatory is a collaborative initiative led by the APP-DRR Stakeholder Group of Individuals and Organisations Concerned with Gender Issues (GSHG), in partnership with the Women’s International Network on DRR – Philippines and the Women and Gender Stakeholder Group of SEM-DRR. This initiative builds on methodologies developed during the Latin America and Caribbean Women’s Network for DRR at the LAC Regional Platform in 2023.

The Gender Observatory aims to gather insights on how gender and intersectionality perspectives are integrated into the conference sessions. Observers will fill out a form for each session they attend, assessing whether discussions incorporate considerations of gender, ethnicity, ability, and other intersecting identities. Filling out this form will take approximately 20-25 minutes.

Help Desk on Gender & Social Inclusion

In addition to the Gender Observatory, DN will establish a Help Desk on Gender & Social Inclusion within the conference’s common space. This desk will provide attendees with tangible tools and guidance to enhance gender-responsive actions in DRR, climate risk reduction, and resilience building.

The Help Desk aims to highlight good practices and advancements made by stakeholders, especially in line with commitments from previous APMCDRR and encourage national and local governments to prioritise the recommended actions outlined in the Sendai Gender Action Plan. The Help Desk will also provide tools and resources to stakeholders to integrate gender and socially inclusive approaches throughout the cycles within actions (identification, dialogue, execution, products and results) that organisations can use to improve a country’s/community’s resilience.

The Help Desk will cover several themes, including:

  1. Collection and analysis of disaggregated data
  2. Strengthening women for DRR and resilience building
  3. Gender equality across laws, policies, strategies, plans and institutions for DRR
  4. Inclusive disaster risk governance
  5. GBV and Sexual and Reproductive Health
  6. Gender-responsive budgeting and investments for DRR

Experts will be available during designated time slots to discuss these topics and answer questions. Stay tuned for more information about the Help Desk including detailed time slots and more information about the experts and the activities on the DN website soon!
