Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction 2022
Duryog Nivaran is participating in the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR), in Australia, partnering with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR). The APMCDRR at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre from 19-22 September 2022.
Convened by UNDRR, the APMCDRR is the main regional platform in Asia-Pacific for promoting coordination and cooperation on DRR and the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. It brings together UN Member States, intergovernmental organisations, international and national organisations and stakeholder groups, to accelerate progress on disaster risk reduction.
“Learning Lab – Gender Considerations in DRR – An All-of Government Approach to Inclusive DRR Governance” is one of the main session which DN is actively taking part in the conference. The session is focusing on Gender-responsive DRR underlined in the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction as a necessary condition for effective DRR outcomes for community resilience building, other global frameworks emphasize on gender-responsive climate actions as a non-negotiable requirement, Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to DRR in Governments in Asia and the Pacific region and paroral important interest areas in the discussion.
In addition, Duryog Nivaran led the GSHG to set up a Pledge Wall.
The Gender Stakeholder Group of the Asia Pacific Partnership consultation was held on the 19th of September, the Pre Conference Day. There was a participation of around 40 feminists and gender advocates. The meeting discussed the statement of the GSHG and discussed some actions on the way forward.
Duryog Nivaran is also co-hosting an event with Asia Disaster Preparedness Centre on Gender Considerations in DRR. The agenda of the event is as follows.

PROJECT IN FOCUS
Revitalizing the Disaster Risk Management (DRM) process in the New Normal
Duryog Nivaran, together with two of its members the Centre for Poverty Analysis (CEPA) and Janathakshan, carried out this project in three project locations of Gomarankaduwela, Abayapura and Mudcove in the Trincomalee District. This project was funded by The Asia Foundation’s Small Grants Programme.
The project was implemented between January 2021 to March 2022, a period when Covid-19 pandemic was at its height, and this project attempted to build capacities and to empower all parties to take responsibilities for their area/ community, to revitalise the social contract and strengthen participation, accountability and transparency. It also explored how community structures need to adjust to face the new normal.
